Choirs & Music
Music beautifies the liturgy and enables us to express more than mere words will allow. We have a wealth of hymnody, sung with gusto by our congregation. Its choral heritage is one of the great treasures of the Anglican Communion. Through our Cathedral choirs, accompanied by our wonderful organ, we ensure that we are part of a living tradition, one that is vital and continually being enriched by new music and new repertoire.

The Parish Choir
The Parish Choir was formed two years ago and sings once a month at the 9:00 Eucharist. There is no expectation on anyone singing for every month – just come when you wish.
The Choir is for those who enjoy singing and who would like to help lead the music in the cathedral. It is there for anyone who cannot make the weekly commitment that the Cathedral Choir involves. It also serves for those who are a little reticent about their musical abilities but who enjoy singing nonetheless. There is no audition needed to sing in the Parish Choir.
We meet for rehearsal at 8:00am on the morning of the service at which we are singing. Coffee and donuts await early arrivals in Morrison Hall. We find you a robe and learn a simple anthem.
Music is available for pick-up on the Sunday and during the week before we sing so that anyone who wishes may do some homework.
The dates for this year’s performances are:
September 5th , October 10th, November 7th (All Saints), December 5th, January 2nd, February 6th, March 6th, April 3rd, May 1st
The Cathedral Children’s Choir
Starting in September the Music Program will expand to include a choir for all children in the Parish and Cathedral Congregation. The Choir will be open to all children in the First Grade and above and will be under the direction of Beth Maze and Kelly Estes, both experienced teachers with a wealth of musical expertise.
The Choir will perform once a month at the 9:00 service. Rehearsals will take place after Sunday School on the weeks immediately before the performance. The new Cathedral Children’s Choir will take a major role in the Parish Christmas Pageant. They will also be involved at the Christmas Eve and Palm Sunday services.
The dates that the Choir will be singing are as follows. Exact timings and location will be announced when they are confirmed.
September 19 (Rehearsal on Sep 12th), October 17 (Rehearsal on Oct 10th), November 21st (Christ the King) (Rehearsal on November 14th), December 19th (Rehearsal on December 12th)., January 16 (Rehearsal on January 9th), February 20 (Rehearsal on February 13th), March 20 (Rehearsal on March 13th), April 10th and/or 17th (Palm Sunday) (Rehearsal on April 3rd), May 15 (Rehearsal on May 8th).
The Cathedral Handbell Ringers
There’s considerably more than meets the eye to handbell ringing. Not only do the bells get rung in the standard way but they can get struck with mallets or hit against the table. They can be swung from back to front and one can even pluck a handbell.
It is an art that requires a rudimentary knowledge of musical notation and a degree of hand/eye coordination.
It is a great way to sharpen up or revive any latent musical talent you may have. If you know the difference between a whole note and a quarter-note and can count to four you have the knowledge necessary to be a handbell ringer.
Our rehearsals always combine hard work with a sense of fun. We help each other and make music that is always easy on the ear and as much fun to play as it is to listen to.
Currently some of our handbells need owners. They languish in their cases unused. If you would like to adopt a handbell and visit it for one night a week you will bring joy not only to the bell but to yourself as well.
The Cathedral Handbell Choir meets on Wednesday evenings at 6pm and rehearses until 7pm. Rehearsals will commence on September 7th.
The Cathedral Choir
The choral tradition of the Anglican Communion is one of its crowning glories. Our Cathedral Choir is proud to play its part in perpetuating the finest traditions of church music.
Together with the magnificent Cathedral Organ, the Cathedral Choir is the mainstay of the music program at Trinity Cathedral. We sing music ranging from ancient Plainsong to the minimalist music of composers such as Arvo Part.
The Cathedral Choir meets every Wednesday evening from 7:00 thru 8:30 and sings at the 11:15 service every Sunday. In addition it plays a large part in celebrations of Christmas and Easter and sings at other occasions during the year.
Entry to the choir is by audition and the ability to read music is a minimum requirement as well as a commitment to the weekly rehearsals.
The Tower Bells
“The Cathedral has a full peal of bells in its Tower and is a center for the art of campanology (change bell ringing). The Trinity Ringing Society meets every Wednesday evening from 6:30pm thru 8:30pm. Full instruction is offered to beginners and all are welcome to try. The Centennial Bells are rung every Sunday before the 9:00 service, other special occasions, and are often requested for weddings. The change bell ringers can be watched in the Bell Tower every Sunday morning.”
