Lila Book Study Begins January 31
January 10, 2017

Marilynne Robinson is coming to Trinity as part of the INSIGHTS Series on February 25.
She is the recipient of a 2012 National Humanities Medal, awarded by President Barack Obama, for “her grace and intelligence in writing.” In 2013 she was awarded South Korea’s Pak Kyong-ni Prize for her contribution to international literature. She is the author of Lila, a finalist for the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award, Gilead, winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Critics Circle Award, and Home, winner of the Orange Prize and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and a finalist for the National Book Award. Her first novel, Housekeeping, won the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award. Robinson’s nonfiction books include The Givenness of Things, When I Was a Child I Read Books, Absence of Mind, The Death of Adam, and Mother Country, which was nominated for a National Book Award. She lives in Iowa City where she taught at the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop for twenty-five years.
Lila is the third, and some have said the best, volume in Marilynne Robinson's trilogy of novels about people and life in a small town in Iowa during the Eisenhower era. The book is rich with themes of love and life, faith in its perplexities, and grace that undergirds it.
The book study begins on January 31 and continues through February 21, meeting on Tuesdays at noon in Baker Parlor. It is led by The Rev. Dr. Christoph Keller III and Eliza Borné.

Trinity Cathedral Welcomes the Hendrix Chapel Choir
January 09, 2017

On Sunday, January 29, the Hendrix Chapel Choir will lead the music at the 4:00 p.m. Evensong service in preparation for their residency in Tewkesbury, England this summer. The Hendrix Chapel Choir is a student-led vocal ensemble that leads choral worship on the Hendrix College campus. This August, the choir will hold a week-long residency at Tewkesbury Abbey, a 900-year-old church just a few miles from the Welsh border. As a way of preparing for the tour, the choir is performing every piece of music at our service of Evensong at the Cathedral. These services around central Arkansas serve another purpose too; the offerings go towards their fundraising efforts. Our music for the service will be:
- Preces and Responses: Richard Webster
- Psalm: 35 set to Anglican Chant by Charles Villiers Stanford
- Canticles: Evening Service in G major by Charles Villiers Stanford
- Anthem: O Lord, the maker of all things by William Mundy
- Voluntary: Præludium Circulare by Charles-Marie Widor
This will be a truly beautiful and worshipful experience, so come worship with us on January 29 at 4:00 p.m. and support the Hendrix Chapel Choir in their preparations for their residency in England.

Music will be provided by a choir drawn from the churches of the Convocation and the preacher will be Rev. Stephen Hancock, Senior Pastor at Second Presbyterian Church, Little Rock. This Week at Trinity 12/20/16
December 20, 2016
Wednesday at Trinity Cathedral:
Schedule:
Cherub Choir at 4:30 p.m.
Eucharist with Healing at 5:05 p.m.
Dinner 5:15 p.m. – 6:15 p.m.
Tower Bell Ringers at 6:00 p.m.
Seraphim Choir at 6:15 p.m.
Classes for all ages at 6:15 p.m.
Class Descriptions:
- Embracing the Prophets (Conference Room): Who were the Prophets? Were they ancient meddlers who enjoyed prognosticating about future events? Were they social activists crying out for reform? Or, were they messengers from God, standing in judgment over the political and religious leaders of the times? To find the answers, join a study by Dr. Walter Brueggemann, facilitated by George Harper.
- Advent in the Home (Baker Parlor): Christmas has increasingly become a holiday cut off from its purpose of celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. It is, therefore, important for us to recapture the season of Advent as a time for preparing for Christmas. Advent comes from the Latin word adventus, meaning “coming.” Advent begins the church year, starting four Sundays before Christmas. The season of Advent has been set aside as a time of preparation for Christmas since at least the last half of the 6th century. Advent is a time for self-examination and asking for forgiveness as the church is preparing for Christ’s Second Coming even as it prepares for Christmas. Join Susan Allen as she presents some different and meaningful ways to bring Advent into your home this year.
- Crafty for Christmas (Staff Lounge): Love this time of year but feel like you never have time to do all those fun and creative Christmas ideas you found on Pinterest? Just show up and we will create some holiday crafts to make all your friends think you are the next Martha Stewart. Led by Annie Burton. For ages 12 - 122.
